Weight Loss FAQ
Many people stop their GLP-1 within the first year, usually because no one told them what to expect. Here's what Dr. Harris tells every new patient.
What is GLP-1, and how does it help me eat less?
GLP-1 is a natural hormone your intestines release once food reaches them. It sends a short burst of signal, just a few minutes long, telling your stomach you're full. The problem is that by the time that signal arrives, most of us have already eaten more than our body needs. GLP-1 medications give you a much stronger, longer-lasting version of that signal (about a week's worth per dose), so you feel full sooner and eat less.
Why do you start me on such a low dose?
You wouldn't teach a 15-year-old to drive in a Lamborghini. The dose that produces weight loss is much higher than what your body makes naturally, so we start small, let your body adjust, and step up gradually. That's how we keep side effects to a minimum.
What should I expect in month 1?
Month 1 is about getting your body used to the medication. You may not lose weight yet, and that's OK. Don't get discouraged. This is the foundation for everything that follows.
What should I expect in month 2?
We double your dose, and your stomach gets a strong "full" signal, so you'll feel full faster. Your brain may not have caught up yet. We all have habits around food, like cleaning our plate or ordering the usual at a favorite restaurant, so your brain may still say "what's one more bite?" Listen to your stomach. Eating past full is what causes nausea and heartburn.
What should I expect in month 3?
By month 3, the goal is to lose about 1–3 pounds per week, depending on your starting weight. More than that can be too much of a shock to your system. Start weighing yourself daily and compare the first and last day of the month. Steady loss in that range is healthy, and it's more than most people can achieve on their own.
Why are diabetes medications used for weight loss?
GLP-1 medications were first developed for diabetes. Because they reduce appetite so effectively, higher doses are now FDA-approved specifically for weight management.
Semaglutide or tirzepatide: which is right for me?
Tirzepatide tends to produce more weight loss; semaglutide costs less and has the longest track record. Dr. Harris will recommend one based on your history and goals.
Are compounded medications safe?
We use a state-licensed compounding pharmacy. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, so the FDA does not review them for safety or effectiveness, and we monitor you closely.
How do units and dosing work?
You'll receive a written dosing schedule in units for your syringe, plus our video on giving a subcutaneous shot.
